Release Date: 20 June 2007
Let’s kick this off by apologising for the impending frequency of the word ‘rock’, because make no mistake, The Pick of Destiny is a movie that’s all about the rock. In fact, we feel a little concerned that we don’t have the word in all capitals. The Pick of Destiny tracks the (fictional) history of the (non-fictional) rock band Tenacious D (aka Jack Black and Kyle Gass), a history that depends on them finding the fabled guitar pick of destiny, which will enable them to become the greatest rock band in the world. But really, the plot is just an excuse for a lot of rock star and comedian cameos (hello to Ronnie James Dio, Ben Stiller, Dave Grohl, Meat Loaf and David Koechner), and for JB and KG to cause a roadie case full of chaos at every turn. Tenacious D is a band that you either love or you hate; if you’re in the joke, The Pick of Destiny will rock your world, but if you’re not, it’s unlikely to change your tune. But for us, it rocked!
Zoom: Academy for Superheroes
Release Date: 20 June 2007
Who wouldn’t want to have super powers? Whether it’s super strength, a healing factor, the power of flight, super-speed or x-ray vision, we would be happy with any of them. So let’s just say that you do have a super power, where do you go to hone your skills? Why, you go to superhero school, of course. Four children have been selected to be part of a secret government project, after the re-emergence of Concussion, a supervillain long thought to be dead. To take the kids through the project is the only man to have fought Concussion and survived: his brother. What you expect with a film like this is an awesome visual display of amazing powers, and Zoom doesn’t disappoint in that regard. It’s also satisfying that Zoom is a superhero film for the whole family, unlike the more adult orientated tone of recent superhero smashes. No-one can deny the many similarities Zoom shares with the Pixar film The Incredibles, and although it’s not of quite the same quality, it will keep youngsters enthralled.
